Fume Hoods

                  • The purpose of the fume hoods is to exhaust dangerous
fumes from the lab. The fume hoods provide a safe
location for storing certain chemicals and chemical waste,
                    including acids and bases.
                  • The fume hoods will also be used when performing
reactions that generate caustic or flammable gases.

                  • To check that the fume hoods are operating correctly, lower
the front shield to a height of ~ 6” and hold a tissue in front
of the opening. If the hood is functioning properly, the air
flow will pull the tissue into the hood.

Emergency Shower and Eye Wash Station

                  Emergency Showers
                  • The emergency showers are for use if chemicals have been spilled
on your clothes or if your clothes are on fire. Emergency shower
                  • The shower is activated by pulling down on the handle.
                  • When activated, the shower will release water from a reservoir,
and water flow will continue until the reservoir is empty.
                  • Do not use the showers for fun!

                  Eye Wash Stations
                  • The eye wash stations are intended to rinse out chemicals that
have been splashed into the eye.
                                                                                                     Eye wash station
                  • Learn the location of the eye wash station and how to use it.
                  • In case of an accident, do not hesitate to use the eyewash station
                    if needed.
                  • Ask for assistance if you are incapable of getting to the eye wash
                    station on your own.
                  • You should wash BOTH eyes for a minimum of 15 minutes.
                  • Notify your instructor or TA immediately.
